However, any agreement would require the Hershey Trust’s approval and careful navigation of Pennsylvania laws designed to protect the company’s legacy and local interests.

Hershey’s brands include Kisses and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and it holds US rights for the iconic KitKat bar. Analysts suggest that current market dynamics might make Hershey more amenable to a deal, including rising cocoa costs and shifting consumer preferences toward healthier options.

Both Mondelēz and Hershey have so far declined to comment on the speculation.

On the markets, Hershey shares rebounded sharply (up 19% at close Tuesday) following the news, having slipped 6% earlier this year amid rising costs and consumer belt-tightening.

Mondelēz’s shares dipped by 4%, reflecting investor caution regarding a potential acquisition.

### Consolidation

Mondelēz acquiring Hershey would reshape the confectionery market by driving pricing and product innovation changes, potentially increasing competition.

Looking at the bigger picture, an analyst from finimize.com told cocoaradar.com that consolidation is the flavour of the era - and "the wave of acquisitions across industries depicts a trend of companies seeking synergies and scale to navigate economic challenges and capitalize on technological advancements."

As of now, both companies have declined to comment on the speculation, leaving industry observers to watch closely as the situation develops.
