Indianapolis set to become ultimate destination for Sweets & Snacks as Expo prepares to roll into town

Organisers of this year’s Sweets & Snacks Expo, which is set to take place from 13 May to 15 May at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, say they expect more than 1,000 exhibitors and 14,000 attendees after a highly successful event in 2024

“We can’t wait to get back to Indianapolis for the Sweets & Snacks Expo, sharing and discovering new confectionery and snack products, plus unlimited opportunities to spot the new flavor and product innovations headed to store shelves in the coming months,” said Carly Schildhaus, director of public affairs & communications at National Confectioners Association (NCA).

The Sweets & Snacks Expo is the largest US trade show dedicated to the confectionery and snack industries and a premier event that also attracts exhibitors and potential buyers from around the globe.

Innovation

Now in its 28th year, the Expo is also synonymous with innovation in the confectionery and snack industries, and the show guarantees attendees the opportunity to discover emerging businesses alongside classic and recognizable brands.

“Our 5x5 series gives five confectionery and five snack companies from Startup Street the opportunity to present their products to a panel of retailers and receive feedback in five minutes or less. Our Most Innovative New Product Awards (MINPA) are a well-established launchpad for brands looking to reach the next level. No matter where you turn, there’s always something new to discover at Sweets & Snacks,” said Schildhaus.

Main challenges for candy industry exhibitors:

Exhibitors from the candy industry face several significant challenges as they prepare for the expo:

  1. Supply Chain Transparency: There is an increasing demand from consumers and regulatory bodies for transparency in sourcing and production processes. Candy manufacturers must implement traceability systems to provide clear information about the origins of ingredients and their supply chain practices. Educational sessions at the expo, such as 'Toward a Transparent Supply Chain,' aim to address these issues and offer strategies for enhancing transparency.
  2. Sustainability Concerns: The sustainable sourcing of ingredients, particularly cocoa, is under scrutiny. Manufacturers are expected to adopt environmentally friendly practices and ensure ethical sourcing to meet consumer expectations and regulatory requirements. The Supplier Showcase will feature educational sessions focused on sustainability within the confectionery industry.
  3. Market Competition and Innovation: With a vast array of exhibitors showcasing new products, standing out requires continuous innovation and effective marketing strategies. Participating in events like the Most Innovative New Product Awards can provide valuable exposure and recognition for novel products.
  4. Regulatory Compliance: Navigating the complex landscape of food safety regulations and labelling requirements remains a persistent challenge. Staying informed and ensuring compliance is crucial to avoiding legal issues and maintaining consumer trust.
  5. US tariffs: Although uncertainty surrounds President Trump’s next move on this matter, any US import tariffs on major cocoa-producing countries will likely give European chocolate companies a competitive advantage over those in the US.

Business and camaraderie

The Sweets & Snacks Expo 2025 offers a platform for exhibitors to address these challenges through networking, education, and showcasing innovations, thereby enhancing their competitiveness in the evolving candy industry landscape.

“Beyond the products themselves, the Expo’s unique combination of business and camaraderie sets the show apart. By gathering manufacturers, retailers, brokers, and suppliers under one roof, we strengthen every link in the production chain and provide attendees with top-tier education sessions that address their top-of-mind topics, Schildhaus told cocoaradar.com.

Industry thought leaders are expected to deliver actionable insights on the latest regulatory developments, Gen Z’s favourite flavours, and more.

“Plus, we’re planning two special events off the show floor to bring attendees together for relationship-building that will last long after the show closes,” said Schildhaus.

“While Sweets & Snacks Expo is the largest candy and snack event in the Americas, we aren’t resting on our laurels; selecting Indianapolis as one of our host cities gives us the ability to continue growing while providing a best-in-class experience for all involved. As we prepare to return to the Indiana Convention Center, we can’t wait to experience once again the excitement in the ultimate destination for candy and snacks.”
