In her key presentation, Elise Fennig, NCA's Chief of Staff and SVP of Operations, said that while consumer spending remained cautious in the first three months of the year, the outlook remained positive, with US consumers anticipating improved fortunes.
US political consultant Kellyanne Conway was the year’s guest speaker in conversation with NCA President and CEO John Downs as a fun talk-show host. She shared insights on what a changing political landscape means for the US candy industry.
She emphasized the importance of brands and companies telling their stories, especially to the new Trump administration and the American public.
Conway also highlighted that Americans seek connection, joy, and nostalgia in products that are affordable, accessible, familiar, and comfortable.

In her opinion, Conway believes that candy perfectly encapsulates these desires, offering a guilt-free pleasure that fosters a sense of joy and fulfillment.
It is a strong message that will chime with the NCA and its members. “Americans are still turning to chocolate and candy as a special way to elevate their celebrations, holidays, and even ordinary days. The connection between our industry’s products and emotional well-being is undeniable, and we are meeting consumers where they want to be met with options for the moment – no matter the occasion,” said Downs.
Sweet success
Downs also highlighted SOTICS's own 'Sweet Success' with '10 Years of Innovation & Inspiration'.
According to the NCA’s 2025 State of Treating report, published this week, sales topped $54 billion in 2024. US confectionery sales will grow over the next five years, exceeding $70 billion in all outlets by 2029.
The report highlighted that consumers are concerned about the price of groceries across the board, leading to widespread shifts in food and beverage spending.
Still, 98% of shoppers reported purchasing confectionery products at some point in 2024, demonstrating that they continue to leave room in their budgets for treats like chocolate and candy that enhance special moments.
Jerry Hagedorn becomes chair of NCA Trustees Board
This year’s SOTIC kicked off in Aventura, Florida, announcing that Jerry Hagedorn, executive vice president for Barry Callebaut, will be the next Chair of the NCA Board of Trustees for a two-year term. Hagedorn most recently served as Vice Chair and will take over for departing NCA Board Chair Tony Jacobs, president of Bazooka Candy Brands.
“As the confectionery industry faces unprecedented challenges and unique opportunities, Jerry Hagedorn’s proven steady leadership will be an enormous asset to our dynamic and diverse membership,” said Downs. “He is an innovative thinker and a tremendous advocate with decades of industry experience, and he is a great fit to lead the way forward into our next chapter.”
Hagedorn’s career spans over three decades, having spent 14 years at Brach’s Confections before joining Barry Callebaut in 2006. He was inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame in 2019.
